Major Investment at Chemnitz University of Technology: New High-Tech Cleanroom Underway

The Chemnitz University of Technology is receiving a new cleanroom worth approximately 68 million euros at the Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies (ZfM), which is intended to take research and innovation in sustainable microelectronics and sensor technology to a new level. The Free State of Saxony is investing this amount—using unspent EU funds—to support the Southwest Saxony High-Tech Region, as announced by the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism on August 25, 2026.

The goal is to significantly advance research in areas such as sustainable microelectronics, sensor technology, quantum and neuromorphic technology, and photonics. The new cleanroom will strengthen the innovative capacity of the “Silicon Saxony” high-tech region and secure over 300 highly skilled jobs. Future users include the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nanosystems (ENAS) as well as the team at ForLab Chemnitz, which conducts cutting-edge research in microelectronics and semiconductor technology as part of a Germany-wide research network.
